Local Michelin stars to be unveiled virtually on Jan. 27

The most prestigious awards for the restaurant industry in Hong Kong and Macau – Michelin Stars – will be unveiled virtually for the first time in a digitally-held ceremony scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. on January 27.
The ceremony will feature presentations to the awardees of the Michelin Guide Hong Kong and Macau 2021 edition through the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau’s official Facebook page as well as the regional Michelin Guide Asia YouTube channel, the organizers informed in a press statement.
The decision was justified by the need to comply with local government guidelines on social distancing in the two territories, as well as with current travel restrictions.
The online ceremony will include an appearance from the International Director of the Michelin Guides, Gwendal Poullennec, who will reveal the restaurants selected in the 13th edition of the Guide, as well as share words of encouragement for chefs and restaurateurs going through an unprecedentedly challenging year.
“Despite the ups and downs we have all been through in 2020, the Hong Kong and Macau restaurateurs community have demonstrated an incredible resilience and commitment to overcoming the obstacles and adapting their businesses with an unchanged passion, talent, and innovation.
Through the global crisis, economic challenges, and temporary shutdowns, many restaurants continued to play their part in keeping Hong Kong and Macau’s culinary scenes lively and dynamic by offering creative dining experiences to foodies. That’s also what we want to celebrate during the coming ceremony,” Poullennec said in anticipation of the event.
Another novelty of this year’s event is the introduction of a brand-
new distinction named the Michelin Green Star.
The Green Star aims to pay tribute to restaurants that have embraced sustainability in their day-to-day operations in areas such as efforts in food waste reduction, recycling, and the promotion of local and ethical ingredient sourcing, among other initiatives.
This award, launched for the first time in France in January this year, will be allocated based on research and data collected during the guide inspectors’ fieldwork.
