Macau Pass has been officially approved to provide acquiring services to Alipay+ market-leading partner e-wallets from the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand.
This means that in addition to Alipay, AlipayHK, WeChat Pay and Simple Pay, Macau Pass payment devices will from now be able to accept GCash, Touch ‘n Go eWallet and TrueMoney, following South Korea’s Kakao Pay.
With Southeast Asian governments’ active efforts to promote the digital economy and the region’s e-commerce boom, it is estimated that by 2025, at least six Southeast Asian countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines, will have more than 440 million e-wallet users.
In Macau, mobile payments had already increased by 40% last year, leading the Monetary Authority of Macau (AMCM) to extend the use of Simple Pay to buses last April.
“Comprehensive and innovative digital solutions is the key to accelerate the digital transformation of Macau’s service industry,” the chairman and CEO of Macau Pass Sun Ho said in a statement.
“Through the cooperation with Alipay+, the innovative one-stop payment solution will accelerate the digital transformation of local merchants in Macau, create a connected international digital payments ecosystem in the city, solve the problem of cross-border payment for international tourists, and will help companies find new marketing growth opportunities,” the CEO added.
