Mozambique’s flagship airline carries more passengers in 2014

Mozambican flagship airline Linhas Áereas de Moçambique (LAM) in 2014 recorded an increase of 10 percent in passenger numbers, during which the national flag transported 788,000 people, the airline’s spokesman said Tuesday in Maputo.
Senior management of the company gathered at a seminar to assess the degree of achievement of the company’s Strategic Plan for the 2014/2018 period, according to Mozambican daily newspaper Notícias.
Spokesman Carlos Sitoe stressed that the company last year added a Boeing 737-700 aircraft to its fleet with capacity to carry 132 passengers, had signed a purchase agreement for three Boeing aircraft and started flights on the new Maputo/Nacala/Maputo route.
“At the end of last year we also started flights at reduced prices, under the Letzgô name, serving the cities of Maputo, Beira, Nampula, Tete and Quelimane,” added Sitoe.
In terms of increasing the fleet Sitoe said the first two Boeing aircraft would be delivered in June and July of 2016, with the third plane due to arrive in Mozambique in June 2017.
The chief executive of LAM, Lacumba Aiuba, said the company would be audited in April by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), in June by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and in August by the International Organization for Standardization. The EASA audit is essential for the air carrier to be taken of the European Union blacklist, he said.  MDT/Macauhub
