The newly established Macau Academy of Cinematic Arts at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) expects to welcome its first batch of doctoral students in September next year, revealed Professor Pang Chuan, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.
Responding to the local government’s determination to develop the creative industries sector, the notion of building such an academy arose last year at the university, along with a view to nurturing management talents in the moviemaking industry.
Chinese film actor, screenwriter and director Jiang Wen has been invited to be the head of the academy, while celebrated French director of the film “Wolf Totem,” Jean-Jacques Annaud, has been invited to be its honorary president.
Recently, the university signed a memorandum of understanding with the mainland organization the China Film Archive, also known as “China Film Art Research Centre,” for conducting cooperative research and academic exchanges. A partnership has also been forged with the country’s China Great Wall Art and Culture Center for similar purposes.
“On one hand, our university aims to support the government to develop culturally creative industries,” said Prof. Pang. “And we also have enough resources from the China Film Archive and China Great Wall Art and Culture Center.”
He also stressed that regional cooperation allows the academy to serve as a platform to attract people from different industries and organizations, so that they can work together on film production.
According to the school’s dean, around twenty places in the program will be open for applications from the public. Staff reporter
