Timor-Leste (East Timor) and New Zealand have signed an agreement to develop fish production (aquaculture) by creating 200 small businesses in the country, the New Zealand embassy announced in a statement yesterday.
“Over the next four years we want to see 200 small aquaculture companies established and create 600 jobs,” said New Zealand ambassador in Dili, Jonathan Schwass.
The agreement was signed as part of the government’s strategy to combat malnutrition in Timor-Leste and to increase consumption of fish per person to between 6 and 15 kg by 2020.
As part of the project, which is in the hands of the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, training will be given to technicians to operate in the sector particularly for the link between fish producers and markets.  MDT/Macauhub
