Power failure causes two surgeries to be postponed

Centro Hospitalar Conde de São Januário (CHCSJ) sustained a power cut that lasted for four minutes last Saturday, delaying surgical procedures of two patients, according to the Health Bureau. The power failure occurred at 8:18 p.m. due to the breakdown of the power supply from the electricity company. Systems of medical gas, water, fire protection, security, as well as some of the facilities were affected. The hospital started its back-up power generator in response.  Surgeries of two patients were postponed to Sunday because of the power failure, but the bureau said that the change of time had no impact on the patients’ health conditions. According to a statement, the blackout had only a slight influence on the hospital’s operation. Separately, CEM issued a press release stating that the problem was causes by a underground cable failure.  “To minimize the impact of power outage to the hospital, CEM immediately started the Ring System to restore the power to most of the facilities within two minutes and managed to fully restore the power supply within four minutes,” the company stated.
