The Macau Gaming Enterprises Staff’s Association and an anti-smoking concern group met the health authorities yesterday after over 100 Wynn Macau employees staged a strike at the casino the previous night. The strike was in protest of the gaming operator’s move to convert part of the non-smoking area into a smoking area. Several government agencies intervened to stop the strike on the same night. The gaming company later explained that the decision was the result of the management’s misinterpretation of official regulations.

If Macau really wants to protect its casino workers from the ills of second hand smoke, why not restrict personal working the smoking sections, to smokers themselves. As long as smoking is illegal at adult establishments, where can visitors and residents smoke? Residents may take friends home and place children at risk of second hand smoke. Visitors would have to smoke outdoors, where air quality can be worse than in casinos that have modern air handling systems. Casinos can protect non smoking employees, but to please its predominate Chinese audience, smoking has to be allowed in smoking sections of casinos, restaurants and night clubs.
