FIFA’s ethics committee wants to lift secrecy rules that protect accused officials from being identified and keep case details private.
FIFA prosecutor Cornel Borbely and judge Joachim Eckert say more openness “would help efforts to uncover and clear up fraud.” They say in a joint statement that transparency “would encourage potential informants to support the proceedings.”
Strict secrecy imposed by FIFA’s executive committee meant years-long bans for officials such as Harold Mayne-Nicholls and Vernon Manilal Fernando were announced with little detail of alleged offenses.
The ethics panel has never confirmed which FIFA executive committee members face sanctions in that case.
