Turkey’s foreign minister says this week’s report on the CIA’s harsh treatment of terrorist suspects reveals “unacceptable torture and treatment.”
Speaking in Ankara with his Slovakian counterpart, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said yesterday Turkey was analyzing the report to determine whether its citizens were involved.
He praised the report’s release, saying “transparency is important,” but added “this does not legitimize the torture that was inflicted.”
He says: “I hope our friend and ally, the United States, won’t repeat these kinds of actions.”
Slovakian Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak says the use of illegal camps and “unacceptable methods of interrogation” detailed in the report had been known, but he welcomed the report’s publication.
He says, “I see it as a sign of the United States distancing themselves from these practices.” AP
