A controversial nuclear waste plant in Jiangmen, some 90km north of Macau, was scheduled to commence construction at the end of 2013. The plan to build the structure on the south bank of the Yangzi river was scrapped after public protest.
The nuclear plants closest to Macau are located in Yangjiang (Guangdong province) and Shenzhen (Daya Bay plant). The first is currently undergoing expansion. The Yangjiang nuclear plant’s six units are expected to generate 48 billion kwh of electricity a year, after commencing commercial operations in 2019.  MDT
