The European Union says Thailand must take “swift and determined action” by next month to improve its fisheries and labor practices or the threat of a seafood ban will come closer.
In a letter to Thai Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, the fisheries and social affairs chiefs of the 28-nation EU said talks in July in Bangkok “will be a crucial opportunity for Thailand to present concrete and robust measures.”
Despite months of talks, the EU is still unsatisfied with progress to end illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the world’s third-
largest seafood exporter.
The letter said that, barring a breakthrough next month and “tangible progress” by year’s end, a ban might follow.
