ENTERtAInMENT | São João festival returns this weekend to St Lazarus

(The-São-João-festival-was-held-l-weekend-at-São-Lázaro-district)-s-joas069The Portuguese “São João Festival” cultural celebration is returning this weekend to the St Lazarus neighborhood, organizers have stated in a press release.
On Saturday and Sunday, traditional delicacies and drinks will be available from various booths set up around the neighborhood’s main street. Grilled sardines are one of the festival’s most popular dishes.
Organizers said that this year the fiesta will again feature traditional products from Fundão, a town in central Portugal, in particular their famous cherries, which have recently become popular for use in various recipes, from pastries to savory dishes.
The São João Festival is a Portuguese catholic celebration in honor of St. John the Baptist. It is widely celebrated in Porto,
a city in the north of Portugal.
Local bands will also be performing during the two-day event.
The festivities in Macau are being jointly organized by five local groups, namely the Macanese Association; House of Portugal (Casa de Portugal); the Pensioners’ Association (APOMAC); the Association for Macanese Education; the International Institute of Macau; and the Portuguese School of Macau. The Macau Foundation and the Tourist Office are also sponsoring the event.
Organizers said last year that more and more Chinese people have been participating in the festivities. CP
