Gov’t rental expenditure decreases

Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lei Wai Nong confirmed at the AL that government has been reducing spending on renting private spaces and venues to host public services.

In response to an inquiry from lawmaker Lei Chan U, the Secretary disclosed that annual spending on rent has decreased from the previous MOP70 million to the current MOP54 million.

Still, the Secretary noted that there is still a lot of work to do as most of the government departments and services due to vacate private buildings have yet to do so as the public facilities that will host them are not yet complete.

He also acknowledged that while some of the MOP16 million in savings comes from moving services into publicly owned spaces, the majority comes from successful renegotiation of rental fees with landlords, particularly during the pandemic period.
