The government will use the “Peking Union” brand to boost the Macao Medical Center of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, also called Macao Union Hospital, in attracting medical tourism patients and enhancing cooperation with universities on research and investigation, the director of the Health Bureau (SSM), Alvis Lo, said in a written response to an inquiry from lawmaker Lei Chan U.
In the response, Lo remarked that the local unit will “fully leverage the strong brand of Peking Union Medical College Hospital to build partnerships with universities, research institutions, insurance providers, tourism stakeholders, and integrated leisure enterprises,” adding, “It also aims to align with current medical visa policies to provide convenient access for patients.”
The SSM director also noted that the facility, “combining cutting-edge technology, advanced equipment, and regionally competitive pricing, seeks to boost medical tourism and expand Macau’s health and wellness sector.”
He further explained that the hospital is gradually launching private services under its International Medical Center, including a Health Management Center offering aesthetic medicine services focused on facial rejuvenation. This includes 16 advanced treatments, such as picosecond laser and radiofrequency microneedling.
Expected developments this year
Addressing the upcoming developments expected to be implemented this year, Lo mentioned the expansion of aesthetic medicine and vaccination services, as well as the introduction of new services such as weight management and cancer prevention.
Lo also stated that private hospital rooms and personalized health management services would be introduced this year.
Regarding medical tourism, the director emphasized that the hospital would benefit from creating wellness-themed travel packages and accommodation discounts, which the Macao Government Tourism Office is preparing to target specific markets.
In his inquiry, Lei wanted to know the status of using the new hospital to develop the healthcare industry in Macau, with a focus on medical tourism, and asked for specific measures toward this goal.
