IAM investigates discovery of three dead dogs in Coloane

Officials are investigating after three dead dogs were discovered in close proximity along a ring road in Coloane. The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced yesterday that the animals were found in three adjacent locations, prompting the investigation.

According to the IAM’s statement, it began receiving reports from residents about the carcasses on November 29.

In response, IAM personnel were sent to inspect the sites and conduct autopsies on all three dogs.

Autopsy results revealed systemic hemorrhagic lesions in each animal.

IAM said it has reported the case to the police and is awaiting further investigation. The bureau added that it is closely monitoring the situation and has increased personnel in the affected areas to follow up.

The deaths have sparked public concern that the dogs may have been poisoned by rat bait used in local pest control operations. However, IAM reassured the public that the bait contains a bitter substance meant to induce vomiting in animals such as cats and dogs. The bureau stated, “For animals with a gag reflex, including cats and dogs, accidental ingestion would cause a vomiting reaction, making swallowing difficult. Thus, the probability of poisoning from accidental ingestion is extremely low.”

IAM explained that the dosages are calculated for rats’ smaller bodies and that the risk of poisoning from accidental ingestion by pets is considered extremely low.

The bureau also emphasized that rat bait boxes are secured, locked, and placed in public corridors and burrow-prone locations, with baits kept out of sight to reduce risks to both people and animals.

Authorities continue to investigate the case.
