LRT: Barra ‘hub’ construction delayed to March 2023

Construction of the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) Barra station has suffered a delay and the station will not be completed until March 2023, the Chinese language newspaper Macao Daily reported, citing government sources.

Construction was to have been finished by November this year, but the government said the impact of the pandemic outbreak delayed the project’s conclusion.

The same media report noted that the works, which started four years ago, will be delayed by 74 days, but that this will not affect the facility being opened to the public next year.

Citing the same government source, the Chinese media outlet also stated that, besides being 2.9% behind the planned completion date, the project is also 0.7% over the initial budget.

Currently, electrical and mechanical installations and testing are occurring, while the main project and system are waiting to be tested.

Upon completed, the station will be able to receive LRT trains from Taipa’s Ocean station, currently one of the terminal stations in Taipa, passing through the lower platform of the Sai Van Bridge.

This station will allow the extension of the Taipa line into the Peninsula, and is expected to include a transport hub that will link the LRT to other public transport modes such as buses and taxis.
