Macao Orchestra opens season with Eric Lu in poetic form

The Macao Orchestra’s 2026-27 season opened last week with a “Forever Beethoven” concert that showcased American pianist Eric Lu in a performance of rare poetic depth.
The Chopin International Piano Competition gold medalist, praised by The Guardian as “a veritable poet of the keyboard,” delivered a luminous interpretation of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor.
Under the baton of Music Director Lio Kuokman, Lu’s playing was marked by precision, contemplation, and restraint.
His tone in the second movement was delicate and translucent, exuding Chopin’s poetic romanticism without descending into sentimentality.
In the finale, rapid passages flowed with crystalline clarity, brilliantly balancing virtuosity with dance-like vitality.
The seamless rapport between soloist and orchestra allowed for a natural ebb and flow, making Lu’s time-stretching and momentum feel effortlessly organic.
The programme also featured Dukas’ Fanfare from La Péri and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, which continues to captivate audiences across centuries.
If this opening concert is any indication, the Macao Orchestra’s 2026-27 season promises to be one of its most exciting yet.
With upcoming performances by Laurence Cummings and violinist Baiba Skride, the orchestra continues to push boundaries while honouring classical traditions. Music lovers would be wise to keep a close eye on the Macao Orchestra’s calendar—this is a season not to be missed. IS
