Macau passport holders rise in global travel document rankings

Macau passport holders have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 144 destinations, boosting the territory’s ranking to 31st on the 2025 Henley Passport Index.
This marks an improvement from 34th place last year, reflecting recent government efforts to expand travel freedoms through new visa agreements with countries such as Jamaica and Chile.
In the past year, the government has negotiated visa-free travel agreements with additional countries, including Kazakhstan and Indonesia.
The top three passports in the 2025 Henley Passport Index belong to Singapore, Japan, and South Korea.
The Singaporean passport allows its holders visa-free access to 193 countries, while passport holders from Japan and South Korea can travel to 190 countries without needing a visa.
Additionally, the index indicates that most of the other highly ranked passports are from European countries, suggesting high levels of global mobility.
Macau has shown an upward trend in its passport ranking over the past three years, having reached its highest position of 30th place in 2014.
The Henley Passport Index is compiled using information from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), offering an assessment of global passport strength.
