Restaurant transactions grow 3.2% despite retail drop

Data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) shows that electronic payment transactions in the restaurant sector rose 3.2% year-on-year to MOP5.69 billion in the first five months of 2025. In May alone, restaurant transactions grew 7.7% year-on-year to MOP1.15 billion, with fast-food, Western, and local-style eateries leading the gains. Conversely, retail trade transactions fell 13.6% to MOP20.81 billion during the same period, though May saw a smaller decline of 3.1%. Cosmetics, pharmacies, watches, and footwear retailers reported month-on-month growth in May, while leather goods sales declined.
