Todd leads the way, Hickman in pursuit

Last year’s winner, Davey Todd, led the way in yesterday’s early morning Free Practice (FP) session, effectively kicking off this year’s Grand Prix (GP) on-track action.
On his Zeeco BMW M1000RR, Todd recorded the fastest lap of the session with a 2:26.210, well ahead of his 8TEN Racing teammate Peter Hickman, who posted a 2:28.824, trailing Todd by 2.614 seconds.
Finishing third in the FP was Rob Hodson in the SMT Racing Honda CBR1000 RR. Hodson posted his best lap time (2:29.162) right at the checkered flag, finishing just 0.338 seconds behind Hickman.
The one-hour session was shortened by about 15 minutes due to a red flag during the middle of the session after Michael Sweeney crashed his Martin Jones Racing BMW M1000RR at Dona Maria bend. Although the rider was unharmed and the damage to the motorcycle appeared minimal, the crash caused a fluid spill on the track that had to be cleaned before the session could resume.
The results of the first session show that, for now, Todd appears to be in a league of his own, leading the pack by over 2.5 seconds. RM
