The Legislative Assembly’s First Standing Committee is reviewing proposed amendments to Road Traffic Law, with the government introducing tougher penalties for improper parking and other traffic offenses.
Committee chairperson Ella Lei said the draft law proposes a MOP1,500 fine for moving another person’s motorcycle from a legal parking space.
The government cited public complaints that legally parked motorcycles had been relocated to no-parking zones. The new provision aims to clarify penalties and empower police to investigate and penalize offenders.
The proposal also includes an increase in the fine for parking within 10 meters before or after a bus stop, from MOP300 to MOP900, to reduce obstruction of passenger boarding.
However, fines for stopping directly at bus stops will remain at MOP300.
In addition, the committee alsi discussed enhanced penalties for violations such as failing to maintain a safe driving distance, not slowing down when required, and driving at excessively low speeds. Offenses on general roads, bridges, and tunnels were also reviewed. LV
