Typhoon cancels 60 flights as extreme heat grips Macau

Typhoon Dolphin has disrupted air travel between Macau and several regional destinations, with 60 flights canceled over the past several days as the storm affected regional routes and the city sweltered under extreme heat.

According to data from Macau International Airport, 36 flights were canceled yesterday and another 12 today, while the Civil Aviation Authority had earlier announced 12 cancellations for Friday and Saturday.

The cancellations affect routes between Macau and several cities, including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou and Taipei.

The airport urged passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information before heading to the airport.

Meanwhile, Macau continued to experience extreme heat yesterday as Typhoon Dolphin brought exceptionally hot conditions to the region.

The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) recorded a temperature of 35.9 degrees Celsius at its Taipa Grande weather station at about 2:30 p.m., the highest temperature recorded at the station this year.

An orange high-temperature alert remained in effect. Real-time monitoring showed a high of 38.2 degrees at the Outer Harbour monitoring station, while temperatures above 37 degrees were recorded in Areia Preta and at Sun Yat Sen Municipal Park. Most other areas recorded temperatures above 36 degrees.

The weather bureau said extremely hot conditions are expected to continue over the next several days, with temperatures expected to remain above 36 degrees this week.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong recorded its highest temperature since records began in 1884 yesterday.

The Hong Kong Observatory said subsiding air associated with the typhoon contributed to generally clear and extremely hot weather across Guangdong.

The observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 36.8 degrees at about 1:30 p.m. yesterday, setting a new record for the city. LV
