CHINA has ordered 31 people to be placed under “coercive measures” for a collapse last year at a construction site that killed 73 people, the state news agency reported this weekend.

Coercive measures are a form of detention that can range from constant surveillance to outright arrest. It is often used against people accused of endangering national security. 

PHILIPPINES Regular troops have rescued a Roman Catholic priest and another civilian who were among dozens of people abducted in May when hundreds of militants aligned with the Islamic State group laid siege on southern Marawi city, officials said yesterday.

NORTH KOREA-US President Donald Trump early today mocked the leader of nuclear-armed North Korea as “Rocket Man” while White House advisers said the isolated nation would face destruction unless it shelves its weapons programs and bellicose threats.

Hurricane watches were in effect for many of the very islands still trying to cope with the devastation left by Hurricane Irma.

USA A longtime reporter at an Albuquerque TV station has died after the news helicopter he was piloting crashed in central New Mexico, authorities said last night. Bob Martin, 64, was pronounced dead at the crash scene Saturday night, according to New Mexico State Police.

EMMYS The 69th Emmy ceremony will be about winners and losers and more, including politics and a cheeky turn by host Stephen Colbert [pictured]. Colbert, whose “Late Show” is a regular forum on the Trump administration, said that the president is fair game during the awards show airing at 8 a.m. today on CBS. The Emmys are a celebration of TV, “and the biggest television star of the last year was Trump.”
