Lawmaker Au Kam San pointed out that Macau is more advanced in terms of its Legislative Assembly (AL) and Chief Executive (CE) elections than neighboring regions. He thus argued that it is feasible to adopt genuine universal suffrage for elections of both the AL and CE.

According to a report by All About Macau, Au noted that there are no conditions suggesting that Macau is unsuitable for universal suffrage and that Macau’s society has changed tremendously over the past 40 years. Au added, however, that there has not yet been a discussion of whether a new AL structure should be established to represent the reality of current society and the public will.

Au argued that the “one person, one vote” system represents the most balanced participation for each resident when electing for the AL instead of allowing certain groups of people to have two votes.

Au believes that Macau’s politics and culture mean there will be no chaos if the outcomes of future ALs are elected through genuine universal suffrage.

He admitted that achieving universal suffrage in Macau will take a while and will require strategic timing, adding that it was very important to improve public awareness. It is also key, he said, to let residents take the initiative to participate in social activities and promote a democratic system.
