Casino revenue slips 1.2% to MOP21.9 billion in August

The city’s casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) edged down 1.2% year-on-year in August to MOP21.89 billion (USD2.71 billion), according to data released today by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DISC)
Despite the slight monthly decline, cumulative GGR for the first eight months of 2026 reached MOP169.05 billion, representing growth of 3.7% from the same period last year.
August revenue, however, improved significantly from July, rising 8.1% from MOP20.26 billion.
The result follows concerns among some analysts that the FIFA World Cup, held in North America from June 11 to July 19, may have prompted some gamblers to postpone trips to Macau.
However, casino executives cited by Seaport Research Partners said they did not believe there had been significant pent-up demand from visitors who skipped Macau during the tournament.
Meanwhile, Citigroup reported that spending by Macau’s premium mass-market gamblers had increased despite a slightly lower number of high-stakes players. In its August survey, the bank said the 31 so-called “whales” it observed wagered an average of HKD244,000 per hand, up 54% from August 2025.
