One episode of the “No Trilho dos Naturalistas: Angola” (Tracking the Naturalists: Angola) four-part series will be screened tonight from 6 p.m. at Casa Garden as part of This Is My City 2016.
The series explores the Portuguese botanical expeditions to Africa undertaken by the University of Coimbra naturalists since the 18th century, discussing the diversity and ecology of plants, how tropical ecosystems thrive and the relationship between people and the environment.
The film, directed by André Godinho, will be presented by the project coordinator for the series, António Carmo Gouveia, together with University of Hong Kong botany expert Alexandra Cook.
The botany expert’s current research projects concern the herbarium as a scientific object and the circulation of “materia medica”, a collection of knowledge on medical matters transferred from Asia to Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries.
