Corporate bits | Sands China donates MOP970,000 to local institutions

Sands China Ltd. has continued its annual tradition of supporting higher education in Macau with a MOP 970,000 donation to six Macau tertiary institutions for scholarships and fellowships.

The gaming operator reiterated its support of local students at a cheque presentation ceremony at its company offices recently, and acknowledged the importance of higher education in nurturing Macau’s talent.

Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd., as cited in a statement issued by Sands China, said: “As a company, Sands China remains committed to the importance of investing in talent development – not only for our own team members, but for Macau as a whole.”

With this donation, the total contribution of the gaming operator toward scholarships and fellowships since 2006 now stands at MOP8.43 million, which has benefitted over 1,000 students to date.

The cheques will be distributed among 97 students in support of their studies for the current academic year.

The cheque recipients were chosen based on their academic performance and financial status during the previous academic year.

Macau-Johor bBahru flights start nov. 28

Low-cost carrier AirAsia has clarified that direct flights between Macau and Malaysian city, Johor Bahru, will commence from November 28. Promotional offers are available for bookings made before October 1 for a one-
year travel period beginning November 28, 2017 and ending November 21, 2018.

“We are pleased to introduce the new Macau-Johor Bahru route to further boost the tourism into Macau from Malaysia, and with the convenient cross-border service from Johor Bahru-Singapore, we are able to target guests from Singapore as well to visit Macau via Johor Bahru,” said Celia Lao, CEO of AirAsia for Hong Kong and Macau.

The flight, which is just under four hours in length, will be flown on a daily basis, the company said. An executive at the company told the Malay Mail Online last week that the route was part of the company’s long-term plan to develop Johor Bahru as a regional aviation hub for business travelers and Chinese investors. Johor Bahru is across the border from Singapore and about three hours’ drive from the popular destination Malacca.
