Fewer jaywalking fines issued during Labor Day Golden Week

The Public Security Police Force (PSP) reportedly issued fines to 151 people for jaywalking violations committed between April 28 and May 4.

The number represents a decline compared to the same period last year and previous months, especially given the increased number of people in Macau during the referenced time.

In the past, the average number of weekly fines for this type of infraction has been approximately 200.

The PSP did not specify whether the reduction is due to improved pedestrian behavior or a decrease in police inspections targeting such violations.

Last year, the PSP paid significant attention to this type of road traffic infraction, setting up several teams around Macau in areas considered “black spots.”

Contrary to previous statements, the PSP has not indicated whether it will continue to monitor these cases closely to enforce the law, a detail that may suggest a potential shift in the authorities’ approach to the issue.

Netizens, particularly tourists from the mainland, have criticized local police in online posts showing their fines.

Despite this expression of frustration, in none of the cases was it proven that authorities acted unlawfully or beyond their legal authority.

Jaywalking infractions, including crossing roads at undesignated locations (such as when a zebra crossing is within 50 meters) or ignoring red pedestrian signals, are subject to an MOP300 fine.
