Hengqin Cargo Terminal to open doors by mid-2027

The construction is progressing on schedule at both the Hengqin Upstream Cargo Terminal and the Macau International Airport site, according to the Zhuhai Transport Bureau and Macau International Airport (CAM),

The Hengqin upstream cargo terminal project began soft-ground works in May 2025 and is slated for completion by late 2026, local media report.

With operations expected to begin by mid-2027, CAM Director Simon Chan Weng Hong recently confirmed that construction began in the first quarter of 2025 and is set to finish next year.

Chan explained that since Macau has limited manufacturing, much of its cargo originates from the mainland. The new terminal will allow mainland export cargo to be processed directly at Hengqin instead of being routed through Macau International Airport.

Improving efficiency, the terminal will integrate with the Macau airport’s ongoing expansion and reclamation projects, supporting future cargo growth.

The project forms part of broader efforts to integrate logistics infrastructure between Macau and Zhuhai’s Gaolan Port.

Upon completion, the cargo terminal in Hengqin is projected to handle up to 300,000 tons of cargo annually.

Airport expansion completion targeted for 2030

The ongoing reclamation and expansion project at Macau International Airport is also making steady progress, with land reclamation plans covering 129 hectares.

As part of the comprehensive upgrade plan, runway reinforcement and repaving work is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, said Chan. To minimize disruption to airport operations, CAM assured that construction will be carried out in sections during nighttime hours.

Once completed, the airport’s total area will increase to 325 hectares.
