LRT passenger numbers continue to decline

The number of passengers transported by the Light Rapid Transit System (LRT) is continuing to decline, the company’s monthly statistical data release shows.

According to the same data, the LRT carried some 11,600 passengers per day on average in June, which is 200 less than in the previous month May 2024.

This is the fourth consecutive month in which the LRT has reported a decrease in passenger figures since February this year, when the daily average reached 16,700 passengers.

In a recent report by the Times based on interviews with LRT users, passengers addressed several important flaws in the system that could be contributing factors to the lack of uptake by residents and tourists.

In the report, tourists were reportedly unimpressed with LRT services, the frequency of trains, and the lack of connections between the system and eventual destinations.

For the time being, the LRT system has only one line in operation that offers transportation within Taipa Island and to the Peninsula via an extension of the line into Barra via the Sai Van Bridge.

According to the company as well as transport authorities, two new lines should open to the public this year, one connecting the Taipa line to Seac Pai Van and another to Hengqin Port.
