Mozambique | Deck of the Maputo-Catembe bridge delivered this month

The metal parts that will make up the deck of the Maputo/Catembe bridge have already been built in China and are expected to arrive in Mozambique later this month, the president of the Empresa de Desenvolvimento de Maputo Sul company told Mozambican weekly newspaper Domingo.

Silva Magaia said that the deck consists of 57 pieces, 26 metres long and 12 meters wide, a thickness of three meters and weighing 125 tones each, which will be welded together on site.

The pieces will be hoisted up to the appropriate height by a special crane, “which will require restrictions of navigation in the area during the months of assembly,” said the president of Empresa de Desenvolvimento de Maputo Sul.

Magaia added that the construction works of the bridge are about 70 percent complete, and the bridge will allow the connection between Maputo and Catembe by next December.

Empresa de Desenvolvimento de Maputo Sul was founded to promote construction of the Maputo/Catembe bridge and adjacent roads, as well as the entire project of the Maputo Circular, and the public company is responsible for all construction management.

The company is responsible for designing, building, maintaining, recovering and operating toll roads and bridges, as well as promoting and managing urbanization plans, in particular the Catembe Regional Development Plan and the Urbanization Plan, in partnership with municipalities and local authorities.
