MYANMAR Rohingya insurgents, whose attack on Myanmar security forces last month triggered savage military reprisals, declared a month-long truce yesterday as refugees continued to flood across the border into Bangladesh only to face scant basic resources, hunger and illness. IRAQ More than 1,300 foreign women and children, the families of Islamic State fighters, are being held at a camp for displaced people in northern Iraq, after an Iraqi offensive drove the extremist group from Mosul.

PAKISTAN Police say at least 12 people, including women and children, have drowned at a beach near the port city of Karachi after being swept away by strong waves in the Arabian sea.

ISRAEL-LEBANON Israeli jets have flown low over the southern Lebanese city of Sidon, causing at least one sonic boom. Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry said Saturday it was filing a complaint against Israel at the U.N. Security Council for violating its national airspace to strike targets inside Syria.

EU-TURKEY Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras says ending European Union accession talks with Turkey, as German Chancellor Angela Merkel has proposed, would be “a tactical and strategic mistake.” Tspiras is urging continued engagement with Turkey, despite the authoritarian leanings of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

ITALY Torrential rain in Italy triggered flooding that killed at least six people Sunday in the Tuscan port of Leghorn, including a family of four who were trapped by rising water in a basement. Two other people were reported missing.

BRITAIN Former Prime Minister Tony Blair is not giving up his campaign to prevent Britain from leaving the European Union, using a Sunday Times article to propose that Britain instead toughen its rules on EU immigration.
