Macau passport ranks 9th in Asia, granting access to 72.2% of destinations worldwide

The Macau passport has been ranked 9th strongest in Asia and 50th internationally, granting holders access to 72.2% of destinations worldwide, according to a ranking compiled by Passport Reports.

The passport has a mobility score of 143. Of the destinations accessible with a Macau passport, 93 are visa-free, 42 offer visa-on-arrival or other simplified entry schemes, and eight require an electronic travel authorization. A further 55 destinations require a visa obtained in advance.

In regional terms, Passport Reports ranks Macau third out of 10 passports in the Portuguese-speaking group and third out of five in the Chinese-speaking group. Among World Trade Organization members, Macau’s passport ranks 54th out of 159.

The Macau passport offers 100% coverage of European destinations. Forty-five European destinations are visa-free, one falls under visa-on-arrival or other simplified entry schemes, and one is subject to electronic travel authorization. No European destination requires a prior visa. Ukraine appears in the simplified entry category with electronic visa availability, while the United Kingdom is listed under electronic travel authorization, with a permitted stay of 180 days.

In Asia, coverage stands at 75.5%, comprising 21 visa-free destinations, 14 with visa-on-arrival or other simplified entry regimes, and two with electronic travel authorization. Twelve Asian destinations require a visa. Visa-free access examples cited in the report include mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates. Hong Kong is indicated with a 7-day stay, Japan and South Korea with 90 days, Singapore and Malaysia with 30 days and an arrival card requirement, and Thailand with 60 days and an arrival card. Sri Lanka and Israel fall under electronic travel authorization, with stays of 30 and 90 days, respectively.

In the Gulf countries, total coverage reaches 83.3%. The United Arab Emirates is listed as visa-free with a 30-day stay. Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman fall under visa-on-arrival or other simplified entry regimes and also show electronic visa availability. Saudi Arabia is indicated with a 90-day stay, while the other three destinations allow 30 days. Kuwait requires a prior visa.

For comparison, the Hong Kong passport ranks higher than Macau’s, placing 32nd globally. The passport of the People’s Republic of China ranks 97th internationally, while the Portuguese passport ranks 9th in the world.
