China’s state news agency says a bus has collided head-
on with a truck in the country’s northwest, killing 13 people and injuring many others.
The Xinhua News Agency says the accident occurred yesterday when the bus crossed the center divider of the road and plowed directly into the truck near Jiuquan city in Gansu province.
It says the dead included two people in the truck and 11 passengers on the overloaded bus, which was authorized to carry 55 people but had 61 on board, including seven children.
Pictures on Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, show the truck leaning to one side, while the front of the bus is smashed to pieces. The site of the accident was so damaged that it has been cordoned off for repair, according to local police.
The bus, owned by Xinjiang Siping Commercial Trade Co., Ltd in Urumqi, capital of the far western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was en route from Miquan in Urumqi to Guyuan in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
The Gansu provincial government has dispatched officials and experts to the site for rescue operations. An investigation into the case is under way. AP/Xinhua
