2025 on track to nearly break five-year traffic accident record

The latest data from the Public Security Police Force (PSP) indicates that Macau recorded a total of 14,638 traffic accidents last year, marking the second-highest figure in the past five years.

Notably, 356 of these accidents occurred on Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues. The police’s chart of accident locations also lists Amizade Bridge, Estrada do Istmo, Avenida da Ponte da Amizade, and Avenida Wai Long, with 295, 258, 256, and 243 incidents recorded, respectively. This marks the first appearance of Avenida Wai Long on the list.

“Assisting Citizens in Safe Travel” was the focus as the force announced on Tuesday the release of its updated infographic on traffic accident hotspots from the previous year.

The infographic highlights the top five causes of traffic accidents: failure to maintain proper distance, with 3,087 incidents; failure to control speed, totaling 2,024 incidents; improper turning, with 1,692 incidents; failure to yield right of way, accounting for 1,285 incidents; and improper reversing, leading to 1,091 incidents.

According to statistics on accident-prone locations, 65 traffic accidents occurred at the intersection of Avenida Wai Long and Rotunda de Pac On, involving 121 vehicles and resulting in 47 injuries.

Similarly, the intersection of Avenida do Nordeste and Avenida 1 de Maio recorded 65 accidents, involving 120 vehicles and causing 29 injuries.

At the Cotai Strip Roundabout, a significant number of accidents were attributed to careless turning. Specifically, there were 53 accidents at the intersection with Estrada Governador Nobre de Carvalho, involving 101 vehicles and resulting in 28 injuries.

Additionally, 64 accidents occurred at the intersection with Avenida Doutor Henry Fok, involving 122 vehicles and leading to 19 injuries.

As noted, 59 traffic accidents occurred at Rotunda da Piscina Olímpica and Avenida Marginal Flor de Lótus, involving 94 vehicles, primarily due to loss of control caused by slippery roads from rain.

Meanwhile, the PSPS reported that a total of 1,153 traffic accidents were recorded in the first month of this year.

There were no fatalities; however, 411 individuals sustained injuries in these incidents, including 44 involving pedestrians.
