A Macau resident’s guide beyond the malls

TRAVELOG

For many Macau residents, the weekend ritual of crossing into Zhuhai follows a predictable script: straight through the Gongbei checkpoint, into the sprawling shopping malls, a meal at a familiar chain restaurant, and back home with shopping bags in tow. But those willing to stray from this well-worn path will discover that Zhuhai  harbors a remarkable culinary scene hidden in unassuming alleyways and industrial districts  – from late-night Sichuan dishes to live-fire eel specialists and surprisingly authentic Indian eateries.

Late-night Sichuan  flair:

十二川館子兒

Tucked away  on Mingzhu South Road in Qianshan, 十二川館子兒 is a late-night gem that stays open until  3 a.m., making it a rare find for night owls. The restaurant offers a spacious, comfortable environment  – perfect for late-night dining, with a bistro vibe ideal for dates or casual gatherings. The food delivers authentic Sichuan  flavors, with the signature numbing spice and heat done right. Those initially  skeptical will be pleasantly surprised by the quality. Conveniently located opposite the popular “Rongji Super BBQ” and with easy parking, this spot delivers outstanding value at an average  cost of around  RMB70 per person.

The  art of  eel:

Yuanmu Live-Fire Grilled Eel

For those who appreciate Japanese culinary precision, Yuanmu Live-Fire Grilled  Eel, tucked inside an industrial complex on Guihua North Road, is an essential discovery. Claiming to be Zhuhai’s first live eel specialist, the restaurant insists on slaughter-to-grill freshness, ensuring every bite is exquisitely tender. The signature “one eel, three ways” offers a journey in itself: first,  savor the unadorned harmony of eel and rice; second, add wasabi and  scallions for a pungent, refreshing kick; finally, pour  a delicate genmaicha broth over the rice and eel for a warming, soulful finish. Beyond the classic kabayaki rice bowl, the menu offers salt-grilled eel, skewers with  scallions, crispy eel fins, eel liver in  savory sauce, and salted eel bones  – perfect for pairing with sake among friends.

A  taste of Lingnan: 岭南趙家

For authentic Cantonese seafood with a Lingnan soul, 岭南趙家 (Lingnan Fisherman’s House) on Guihua North Road is a beloved local institution. This  time-honored restaurant  specializes in rustic  fisherman’s-style seafood, served in a setting that evokes the classical elegance of Lingnan water towns  – complete with antique-inspired decor that is both refreshing and refined. Signature dishes include  “Big Basket Tossed Hand-Torn Chicken,” in which the bird is completely deboned, leaving crispy skin and succulent meat in the authentic Shunde tradition  – more flavorful with each bite. The “Roast Meat Platter” offers the classic combination of char siu and crispy roast pork, a study in contrasts: sweet versus  savory, soft versus crisp, rich versus aromatic. The “Black Tofu” is fried until crisp on the outside, then slowly simmered in abalone sauce, allowing the tofu to absorb the full depth of seafood umami  – a perfect balance of light and intense  flavors. Even the humble  “Knife-Smashed Cucumber,” tossed with garlic, vinegar, and  chili, serves as a refreshing  appetizer before the feast begins.

An  unexpected spice kingdom:

Indian Kitchen

Perhaps the most surprising culinary revelation in Zhuhai is the depth and authenticity of its Indian cuisine. Indian  Kitchen, open for over two decades, serves as a gathering spot for the local Indian community  – a reliable indicator of its authenticity.  Located inside Huajing Garden on Shihua East Road in Xiangzhou District, it is widely regarded as the city’s benchmark for Indian food. The menu delivers layers of complex spice in every dish, from classic butter chicken and red lamb curry to aromatic biryani and a variety of freshly baked naan. The relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for those seeking genuine Indian  flavors in an intimate setting.

For the  Passionate Cook:

珠海挂师問挂具百芵

For passionate home cooks, Zhuhai is a paradise for sourcing professional kitchen equipment. 珠海挂师問挂具百芵 (Zhuhai Chef’s Depot Kitchen Appliances) is a well-established supplier  specializing in chef-quality knives, cookware, ceramic and glass tableware, and hotel-grade supplies. It serves both retail customers and wholesale clients,  selling kitchenware, daily necessities, and commercial catering equipment, and offering equipment installation and repair services.

Professional chefs and serious home cooks alike will appreciate the extensive selection of commercial-grade equipment, from basic utensils to  specialized catering equipment. Whether you are looking to upgrade your kitchen knives, source unique bakeware, or outfit an entire home kitchen to professional standards, this is the place to go.

Next time you cross into Zhuhai, resist the pull of the crowded malls and chain restaurants. Venture into the industrial zones, residential complexes, and backstreets. You’ll discover a Zhuhai few Macau residents ever see  – and a culinary adventure well worth the detour.
