Authorities coordinate to ease back-to-school traffic

Authorities are stepping up traffic control measures ahead of the new school term, with the Transport Bureau, Public Security Police, and Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) coordinating to ease congestion and safeguard students.

With nearly 80% of kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools reopening on September 1, authorities are preparing for a significant rise in travel during peak hours.

To meet this rising demand, DSAT has coordinated with local bus companies Transmac and TCM, as well as the Macao Light Rapid Transit company (MLM), to increase bus services by 10% to 15%.

According to the joint statement, the PSP plans to increase patrols near schools to monitor traffic flow and swiftly address issues such as illegal parking or other traffic obstructions.

To further ease congestion during the first week, PSP will temporarily convert selected parking spaces into designated pick-up and drop-off zones.

Meanwhile, DSEDJ will assist schools by deploying extra staff at entry points to ensure that student arrivals are managed efficiently and safely.

Pedestrian safety has also been prioritized, with upgraded crossings and road signs, including a new pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Rua Direita do Hipódromo and Avenida do Hipódromo.

Authorities continue to encourage parents and students to plan their journeys ahead, use public transport or walk whenever possible, and avoid illegal parking to help maintain safe and orderly traffic conditions. NS
