Briefs: 462 million hours online during first-half of 2014

At the end of June 2014, the number of mobile telephone users increased by 10 pct to 1,688,231. Subscribers to Internet services reached 284,830, and the cumulative duration of usage reached 462 million hours in the first half of this year, up by 18 pct and 20 pct respectively year-on-year. According to the statistical data released by DSAL, the number of fixed-line telephone users decreased by 3 pct year-on-year to 156,169.

Tong Chi Kin
leaves Science Fund

Tong Chi Kin, president of the Science and Technology Development Fund’s Administrative Committee, will be leaving his post in the end of August. Frederico Ma will replace him on September 1. The decision was published in the Government’s Official Gazette. In a statement, the chief executive, Mr Chui Sai On, thanked Tong Chi Kin for his achievements in developing scientific and technological knowledge in Macau.  He added that Tong Chi Kin has devoted all his efforts to the development of science and technology, focusing great attention on local education as well as the social and economic advancement of Macau.  Frederico Ma Chi Ngai will hold office for a minimum of two years.

Car accident in Cheoc Van, four injured

The staff shuttle bus of a cleaning company lost control and hit a crash barrier on Cheoc Van road yesterday morning, leaving four men injured.  One victim was badly hurt and was sent to intensive care. Corrosive liquid leaked from the vehicle onto the road and was mopped up by firefighters later. According to the fire authority, one of the passengers, a local resident, aged 61, got his legs stuck in the vehicle. The driver is a 64-year-old local resident, who suffered chest injuries. The remaining two victims are Filipinos. All four were conscious when they were sent to hospital. The Public Security Force (PSP) said the driver passed an alcohol test.
