A local woman fell victim to a suspected investment scam and lost HKD5.35 million, the Judiciary Police (PJ) disclosed yesterday at its regular press briefing.
The victim, who is an office worker, is in her 20s.
According to the PJ, in February this year, the woman met a man on the internet, and they communicated through WeChat and Whatsapp instant messaging apps.
The man successfully tried to convince her to make investments in supposed gold futures, with the claim that the investment would see a lucrative return.
In order to make the investment, the man told the woman to downland a mobile app called “Metatrader5”.
In March, she made her first investment. She subsequently made intermittent bank transfers to bank accounts in mainland China and in Hong Kong.
As of end of last month, she had invested 900,000 Chinese yuan and HKD4.28 million in the platform.
Afterwards, she attempted to withdraw the funds but could not. The male “cyber friend”, meanwhile, vanished. AL
