Two NBA legends urged local young people to dream big and remain committed to the game during the “NBA Cares x Sands Cares Community Impact Week 2026” on Thursday at the Venetian Arena, ahead of the NBA China Games 2026.
On the sidelines of the event, basketball Hall of Famer and eight-time NBA All-Star Yao Ming spoke about the potential of young players in China, regardless of gender.
“I think basketball is the number one, the most popular sport in China,” Yao said. “Regardless of whether they are boys or girls, I think they have great potential and great talent. We have to find the best way to help them reach their limits.”
Asked about the next generation of players like himself, Yao emphasized individuality over comparison. “Nobody really becomes second to anybody. They’re all individuals. I think they will find their own way.”
Four-time NBA champion Kevin Durant, visiting Macau for the first time, delivered a direct message to young players in Asia.

“Just follow your dreams and stay committed to showing up for your dreams every single day. It’s that simple,” Durant said. “If you follow that love for the game, it will take you to different places around the world.”
Durant, entering his 20th NBA season, reflected on his longevity. “I love striving for perfection. I love teamwork and camaraderie. It’s my lifestyle. I’m committed to it, and it’s kind of hard to step away from it.”
He also shared his excitement about playing in Macao. “It’s a beautiful city. I’m looking forward to playing in front of this crowd. I heard it’s sold out, too, so it should be fun.”
