The urban charm of Europe, now just a stone’s throw away from the bustling metropolises of the Greater Bay Area. I’ve discovered a slice of European whimsy in Dongguan city, the Huawei Ox Horn Campus, where the architectural grandeur of the old world meets the technological prowess of the new.

Imagine this: I’m strolling through the Oxford-like neighbourhood, with its grey slate roofs and grand reading halls. Then, after a 20-minute walk, I find myself in the Parisian sector, where ornate buildings and wide boulevards make for a truly Left Bank experience. It’s a moment when I forget I’m in the leafy Songshan Lake area of Dongguan, not Oxford or Paris.

But it’s not just the architecture that captivates me. This is Huawei, after all. The tech giant has created a living, breathing smart area. I hop on the electric trams that connect the various districts, and there’s a fleet of red vintage trains that add to the charm.

Now, let’s add a dash of history. the Huawei Ox Horn Campus is more than just a pretty face; it’s a reflection of the company’s global aspirations.

Designed to be a hub for innovation with a focus on research and development, the campus draws inspiration from some of Europe’s most beautiful and historically significant locations. Completed in 2019 at a cost of $1.5 billion, the campus is a 300-plus acre garden on Songshan Lake in the city of Dongguan, divided into 12 uniquely designed, European-inspired zones where more than 20,000 Huawei employees can work, play and relax.

Whether you’re an employee looking for a break from coding, or a visitor looking for a unique spot for your next selfie, Huawei’s Ox Horn Town has got you covered. The man-made lake is the perfect backdrop for a midday meditation session, and the faux European castles are sure to spark some serious creativity.

Speaking of food, it’s best to manage your expectations. While the architecture may transport you to Europe, the cuisine may not be as authentic. I visited on a weekend and some restaurants were closed. Therefore the food adventure can be a hit or miss.

So, if you’re in the neighborhood and have a Huawei contact (they’re a bit secretive about who gets in), grab a tour: it’s a trip through Europe, minus the airfare and jet lag.
