Elderly woman killed in Border Gate tour bus accident

A 73-year-old local woman died Aug. 16 after being struck by a tour bus near the departure area of the Border Gate checkpoint, marking the city’s fifth fatal traffic accident this year.

Emergency services received a report at 7:19 a.m. and dispatched firefighters and police to the scene. Police found the victim lying on the left side of the tour bus. Paramedics confirmed she had sustained abdominal injuries and was already without a pulse and not breathing. She was rushed to Conde S. Januário Hospital but was pronounced dead at 8:23 a.m.

The tour bus driver, who holds a valid Macau driver’s license, has cooperated with authorities. Police have completed preliminary evidence gathering and reviewed surveillance footage, but the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation. Investigators have declined to disclose further details, citing the ongoing judicial proceedings.

The incident is the latest in a series of fatal traffic accidents this year. In February, a man in his 60s died following a motorcycle skid on Estrada do Reservatório. In May, a 10-year-old boy was killed while crossing a crosswalk in the Areia Preta area. In July, a 73-year-old motorcyclist died after rear-ending a truck in Taipa. Earlier this month, an elderly pedestrian was struck by a bus in Fai Chi Kei and died from his or her injuries the following day.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the tour bus involved in the incident was a cross-border vehicle. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have reiterated their call for any witnesses to assist with the inquiry.
