Non-resident worker detained for alleged sexual assault of elderly woman
A non-resident worker in his 40s has been arrested by the Public Security Police (PSP) for allegedly sexually assaulting a 70-year-old woman and causing her to fall on a public street in the city center.
The incident took place on August 9, when the victim was walking along Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, near Jardim de S. Francisco.
According to police reports, the suspect touched the elderly woman inappropriately, causing her to panic and fall to the ground. She sustained injuries to her face and knees and later sought police assistance.
Authorities identified and located the suspect through the city’s video surveillance system. The PSP detained the man on August 13 near Avenida de Horta e Costa.
During interrogation, the suspect, who works in the construction and renovation sector, denied the allegations. He claimed to have consumed a large amount of alcohol the previous night and stated that he had no recollection of the incident.
The case has been referred to the Public Prosecutions Office, and the man has been indicted on charges of sexual harassment and negligent bodily harm. He is currently awaiting the imposition of coercive measures at the Court of First Instance.
Police have not disclosed the suspect’s nationality or specific employment details. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have reminded the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior.
