Former Hainan official expelled from Party over alleged corruption

China’s top anti-graft authorities have expelled former Hainan Provincial People’s Congress Vice-Chairman Xiao Jie from the Communist Party over serious violations of discipline and law.

The Communist Party of China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision said Saturday that an investigation found Xiao had accepted gifts and banquets, interfered in construction projects, and used his position to seek benefits for others.

Authorities said Xiao also helped relatives obtain advantages through his influence, abused his authority in subsidy and project matters, and was suspected of accepting bribes in exchange for providing assistance.

The investigation concluded that Xiao had seriously violated Party rules and laws. He was stripped of related benefits and removed as a delegate to the Hainan Provincial Party Congress. His case and suspected illegal assets have been transferred to prosecutors for further review.

Xiao, 65, spent most of his career in Hainan, holding senior positions including director of provincial departments overseeing science and technology and agriculture, Party chief and mayor of Sansha, and head of the provincial united front work department.

He was appointed vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the Hainan Provincial People’s Congress in 2021 and retired in 2023. MDT
