Louie Wong appointed acting director of GCS

The deputy director of the Government Information Bureau (GCS), Louie Wong, has been officially appointed the bureau’s new acting director.
The order by the Chief Executive (CE), Sam Hou Fai, was published yesterday in the government’s Official Gazette.
Wong is taking on the role of former director Inês Chan, who left GCS leadership after her term ended on June 30.
In the meantime, Chan has had her role on the Board of Directors of the public broadcaster TDM renewed for one more year, extending her term until August 31, 2026.
The CE’s order on Wong’s appointment takes effect on July 11. Between July 1 and 11, GCS was under the direct authority of the CE’s office.
This new appointment follows a series of government restructuring measures promoted by Sam’s administration since mid-year, which also saw the appointment of a new head at the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM).
At IPIM, Che Weng Keong succeeded Vincent U as president.
Wong has been a deputy director at GCS since 2014, seconding, at the time, the leadership of Victor Chan.
He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Laws in International Journalism and Mass Communication from Jinan University.
He also holds two master’s degrees (a Master of Laws in International Relations from Jinan University and a Master of Arts in Computer-Aided Translation from the Chinese University of Hong Kong).
He joined GCS in early December 1996 as a senior information officer and was assigned as the Research and Publications Division Chief from February 2000 to February 2011.
He was then promoted to Chief of the Information Department until February 2014, when he was appointed deputy director.
Before this appointment, he had served as acting deputy director for a year, indicating that he might soon assume the director role at GCS.
The Official Gazette also noted the appointments and term renewals of the members of several entities and advisory committees, namely those related to the Talents Committee.
Among the many publications in the Official Gazette, Chiang Ngoc Vai was officially appointed as a director through an order issued by the Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Raymond Tam.
Although no formal announcement has been made, as reported by the Times yesterday, speculation within civil service circles suggests that former department head Kelvin Lam may soon be appointed to a role at Macauport, which manages the Ka Ho Port.
At the moment, the Macauport company is led by Ambrose So and vice-chaired by Pansy Ho and Vai Hoi Ieong.
