Inside the greenhouse of the Huizhou Botanic Garden

Huizhou, the verdant backdrop to Shenzhen’s skyscrapers, is a place where the hustle gives way to history and the sea. As a city with a long history (over 1,400 years) and beautiful scenery, Huizhou not only has rich natural resources but also a profound cultural heritage.

If you’re looking for a break from the chaos of city life, Huizhou is the perfect place for a one-day trip back in time. Start at West Lake, which is similar to Hangzhou but with a more laid-back atmosphere. The water is remarkably calm, reflecting the peaceful times that have passed. You can either drift in a boat or meander along the shore, surrendering to the lake’s age-old embrace.

Just a ten-minute drive away is Dongpo Temple, where you can still feel the spirit of Su Dongpo, the poet laureate of the Song Dynasty. The poet was renowned both at home and abroad. Every brick seems to have its own story to tell, inviting visitors to step into the shoes of the wordsmith who once found inspiration in Huizhou’s embrace.

If you’re looking for some green space, the Huizhou Botanical Garden is the place to go. It’s a great oasis right in the city center. The greenhouse is a fantastic example of modern architecture, and it’s a photographer’s dream, with nature’s full palette on display. Admission is free, but it’s probably best to avoid the midday heat by going in the morning.

If you’re more of a beachcomber than a bookworm, Xunliao Bay is the perfect place for you. With the South China Sea right on your doorstep, you can soak up the sun, sea, and a side of luxury that’s as relaxing as it is refined. For romance, Shuang Yue Bay is the place to go. It’s where the sea meets the shore in a loving embrace. It’s an ideal spot for a sunset stroll or just sitting and watching the world go by.

For the intrepid nature enthusiast, Nan Kunshan beckons with its clean air and dense forest. A night or two at a hot spring resort is an experience not to be missed, offering a chance to immerse oneself in the city’s rejuvenating embrace.

Whether you’re into city walks, history, or just chilling on the beach, Huizhou has something for you. It’s a city with a rich history and a modern vibe—a place where you can get lost in history and find yourself in its stories. By Grace Yu, MDT
