Ng Kuok Cheong calls on gov’t to improve parking lot ventilation

In his recent written inquiry, lawmaker Ng Kuok Cheong asked the government about progress in improving ventilation in underground parking lots across the city.
The lawmaker pointed out that unlike ground-level parking lots, ventilation in underground car parks has been problematic.
It is uncertain if ventilation facilities are really working, the lawmaker noted, making the parking lots hot and humid. With car exhaust on top of this, the feeling is almost suffocating, Ng added. The lack of ventilation is especially obvious during the summer period, he said.
He recalled that he had submitted other inquiries, requesting the government to designate a particular department to improve air quality and ventilation in underground parking lots.
In response, the Transport Bureau informed the lawmaker in June that specific requirements would be issued to the operators of underground parking lots, as the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) wraps up its studies on the situation in the third quarter of this year.
The lawmaker expressed his disappointment about the lack of improvement in the situation and raised three questions. First, he asked if the DSPA would be concluding its studies on parking lot ventilation and air quality. Second, he asked whether there will be standard guidelines for parking lot operators to follow. He also asked if the DSPA will expand coverage to private parking lots. AL
