Revitalized Taipa Market sees visitor numbers more than quadruple

The Taipa Market has recorded a significant rise in foot traffic following a major renovation, with average daily visits climbing to about 5,500 in the first half of 2026, more than four times the pre-renovation level.
According to the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), the market previously attracted around 1,300 visitors a day. The increase followed the reopening of its revamped food and leisure area about nine months ago.
The renovation introduced new retail and dining concepts and sought to attract a broader mix of merchants and operators, while improving the market’s long-term viability. The venue has also become increasingly popular with tourists, particularly during the summer.
Social media exposure, Portuguese-inspired traditional decor, diverse food choices and affordable prices have helped draw visitors from Macau and neighboring regions.
Leong Cheok Man, head of IAM’s Department of Animal Health and Market Management, told TDM Radio that the market’s performance following the renovation has been encouraging. He also credited merchants for actively promoting their businesses through special packages and other offers.
The renewed market is part of wider efforts to strengthen Taipa’s tourism appeal. Lam Ka Chon, vice president of the Association for the Promotion of Taipa Community Development, proposed linking the market with Rua do Cunha and the Old Iec Long Firecracker Factory through integrated tourism routes.
He said connecting the attractions could increase visitor flows between them and support the overall development of Taipa’s community and tourism economy.
