Taipa’s Central Park Swimming Pool has been closed by the Sports Bureau (ID), after tests revealed excessive concentrations of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacterium, according to a bureau press statement.
The closure will remain in effect for an unspecified period to allow for cleaning and disinfection works.
“The Sports Bureau regrets any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of the swimming pool and appreciates the public’s understanding,” the statement said.
Tickets purchased for Taipa Central Park Swimming Pool through the online booking system will be refunded to the buyer’s online account via the same electronic payment method.
Experts say E. coli can enter swimming pools via people’s shoes or by being blown in with leaf debris. Once the bacteria contaminates the water, it can multiply under suitable conditions, posing an infection risk to swimmers.
However, experts emphasized that thorough cleaning and disinfection of the pool water system can effectively eliminate the bacteria. They noted that even if a water test identifies the presence of E. coli in the water, that does not necessarily indicate fecal contamination. RM
