TCM AI health station launched to support worker well-being

A new Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) AI staff health service flagship station was launched yesterday at MGM Cotai under the theme “Intelligent Health & Wellness Launch: AI TCM Meets Five-Tone Therapy,” integrating digital health technology with traditional wellness practices to address the growing health concerns of Macau’s workforce.

The launch unveiled a one-stop health preservation service model that combines digital TCM screening, professional medical assessment, and emotional interventions based on intangible cultural heritage.

The event, co-hosted by the Macau Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM), the Macao Society for Music Promotes Health Research (MSMPHR), and the TCM Department of Kiang Wu Hospital, brings together resources from Anhui, Guangdong, and Macau in a cross-sector collaboration.

Organizers described the project as a new benchmark for safeguarding the physical and mental well-being of Macau’s workforce while advancing the broader health industry.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lam Lon Wai, chairman of the FAOM, emphasized the organization’s 76-year commitment to community service and worker health.

He noted that the new flagship station is designed to address the specific health needs of employees, particularly issues related to occupational strain and emotional stress.

“The station will regularly provide free constitution screenings and health education, deploy volunteers for grassroots services, lower the threshold for health prevention, and implement the TCM concept of ‘treating pre-illness,’” Lam said.

He added that the flagship station will eventually expand into communities and enterprises, offering free public welfare testing and strengthening the community prevention network.

AI technology enhances traditional diagnosis

Speaking at the ceremony, Li Xiaoya, chairman of Hefei Yunzhen Information Technology Co. Ltd. from Anhui, cited the ancient theory from the “Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon”: “There are five internal organs corresponding to five different meridians and five oriental musical tones such as Gung (spleen), Sang (liver), Gak (liver), Chi (heart), and Wu (kidney),” explaining the philosophical foundation of the project.

He said that his company has donated three third-generation medical-grade TCM AI devices for the initiative.

The devices collect multimodal biometric data from the tongue, facial features, and pulse, enabling them to identify more than 500 health conditions with an accuracy rate exceeding 98%, according to Li.

Looking ahead, Li said the company aims to leverage Macau’s strategic positioning as “one center, one platform, one base” to promote digital TCM technologies and achievements to Portuguese-speaking countries.

Corporate support for employee wellness

Wendy Yu, executive vice president of Human Resources at MGM China Holdings Limited, said at the launch that her company is the first enterprise in Macau to participate in this collaboration.

She highlighted MGM’s commitment to advancing the innovative model of “artificial intelligence + TCM” to offer employees a fresh perspective on health management.

“Through the deep integration of traditional TCM wisdom and AI technology, the initiative not only enhances health knowledge dissemination and cultural heritage but also substantially improves the physical and mental well-being of team members, enabling them to perform at their best in the workplace,” Yu said.

Medical endorsement and standardized protocols

Li Pengbin, the deputy chief physician of Kiang Wu Hospital, emphasized the hospital’s role as a major comprehensive medical institution in Macau.

He stated that the hospital is providing medical endorsement and technical support by dispatching senior TCM practitioners for on-site services while facilitating the integration of quality medical resources into workplaces and communities.

Li noted that with Macau’s tourism and service industries flourishing, many workers face challenges from shift work and high-pressure environments, making subhealth issues increasingly prominent.

He said the project closely adheres to the “treating pre-illness” philosophy by shifting the service threshold forward and focusing on subhealth intervention.

“AI technology breaks through the subjective limitations of traditional diagnosis, achieving accurate and efficient constitution screening,” Li said. “Technology empowers ancient methods, enabling quality TCM services to truly enter the workplace and benefit the grassroots.”

The hospital is leading the development of standardized service protocols, strictly adhering to medical safety and compliance standards. Li expressed confidence that the project would create a replicable “Macau model” for employee health that could be adapted elsewhere.
